My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo Review

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro – Ultimate Review

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro is a great cigar.  These cigars come in many sizes but I purchased the Toro Gordo, which is a big cigar at 6″ x 60.  The big ring gauge and size allows it to smoke slow and smooth. There are a lot of nuances with this cigar so read more to find out what I noticed.

Introduction

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro BoxPrior to enjoying this cigar I can see there was no expense spared with the packaging.  The cigar box is a thick hardwood box that can be used as a humidor by itself.

The cigars are packed beautifully in the box and a full box contains 23 cigars.  Each cigar is wrapped individually in cellophane.  Upon inspection you can see the cigars are perfectly humidified.  As most purchases in my humidor this was also purchased at the the Famous Smoke Shop. You can get your box here.

Before we get to the review let me give you some information about the cigar.  This cigar is from Nicaragua and was rated 90 by Cigar Aficionado.  The filler is Nicaraguan Habano & Criollo.  Binding this puppy together is a Nicaraguan Corojo ’99.  Finally the wrapper is one of my favorite, Ecuadorian Connecticut.

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro - The Beginning

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo FirstThe cigar is a nice size even though it has a larger ring gauge of 60.  The smell of the cigar was obviously earthy and nutty.  Lighting the cigar is easy and you can see the wrapper just melt to the binder.  Thus allowing a nice even burn.  The beginning flavor is very mild and the smoke coming off the cigar is light.  The nutty flavor stayed with the cigar and for some reason I tasted nutmeg like flavor.  Go figure…  All in all it was a great beginning to a great smoke.

By the way, the cigar is being enjoyed with a cup of hot black coffee.  I roast my own coffee beans and the the coffee is  a Costa Rican Dota Estate roasted to a Full City Roast.  A Full City Roast is a dark roast that is not too oily.  The background music is smooth jazz by Bony James and Miles Davis.   I am in my home office today as it is too cold outside.

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro - The Middle

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo MiddleOn to the middle of the cigar.  I am amazed how nice and evenly this thing burns.  I never had to relight the cigar.  In addition, I didn’t even have to burn one side of the cigar to get it to burn evenly.  It just burns evenly and  smokes beautifully.   There isn’t a lot of smoke with the cigar but a mild burn and the aroma of the smoke is good by itself.  My Father Cigars never seem to burn to harsh and they all seem to burn light without a ton of smoke.  You can check out my previous review on My Father Cigars Flor De Las Antillas here.

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo wrapper1My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo wrapper2As you can see from the picture I had to peel away the second label so I could smoke the last third of the cigar.

This would be my only issue with this cigar by the way.  I did not have it happen to me today, but when cigar makers put the extra big label or the second label around the middle of the cigar you have to remove the label to finish smoking the cigar.  The problem with that would be that you could tear the cigar wrapper when you peel the label away.  Then the last third of your cigar could unravel and the cigar would then be ruined.

The only trick you have to prevent the unraveling is to smoke the cigar as close as you can to the label and then peel the label away.  This allows the label to get warm when the cigar ash is close to the label.  This can warm up the glue and allow it to peel away easily without messing up the cigar wrapper.

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro - The End

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo endFinally we are on to the last third of this wonderful cigar.  The end smokes as good as the beginning.  It is smooth and continues with a mild burn and no loss of flavor.  The wrapper does not unravel and I am successful peeling away the label as you can see in the pictures.

My Father Cigars Connecticut Toro Gordo ashOne of the things that I want to point out is how nice it stayed lit and as you can tell from the picture I only had to get rid of three long ashes from the cigar as it smoked.  That is a nice  thing to happen when smoking.  It makes the cigar more enjoyable because you do not have a lot of ash flying around you because it did not stick together.

On a separate note don’t let the 60 ring gauge deter you from this great cigar.  The bigger ring gauge allows you to smoke the cigar longer and slower.  The cigar does not burn hot and it actually allows it to be a more mild smoke because it can retain its heat and light without a lot of input by you.

All in all this is one of my NEW favorite cigars to smoke.  I will definitely buy another box or two to put in the humidor and share with my friends.

All the best,
Dr. B
